The Office of Public Works (OPW) has announced free admission for all individuals under 18 to heritage sites across the country for the month of August 2025.

This pilot initiative allows visitors under 18 the opportunity to explore and engage with their heritage during the summer period and ensure access for all, by removing financial barriers.  (All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.)

The OPW’s heritage sites serve as invaluable educational resources, helping to foster a deeper understanding of the past across all generations.

Launching this initiative, the Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, Kevin “Boxer” Moran said:

"I am delighted to announce that all u18s will have free entry to OPW heritage sites this August, as part of a new pilot scheme.. We are fortunate to have such incredible castles, monuments and historic properties across the country that are invaluable educational resources.

"I encourage all our young people to get out and explore their local heritage this summer. Our sites are the perfect backdrop to meet friends, explore a fascinating site and have a treat at the local café,"

From castles, to tower houses, from monasteries to battle fields, from botanic gardens to military forts, there are a range of heritage experiences waiting to be discovered nationwide and u-18’s will go free.

In the heart of Roscrea, Co Tipperary, Roscrea Castle, Gardens and Damer House is an ideal location for a day out with the magnificent stone motte castle, historic Damer House and impressive gardens to enjoy.

Venture along the Wild Atlantic Way to The Blasket Centre to discover the literary heritage of the Blasket islands or take in the dramatic views of the Blasket archipelago from the fully accessible clifftop viewing platform.

Discover a Tudor Gem in Co Tipperary at Ormond Castle or learn about the first farmers in Ireland at the Céide Fields in North Mayo.

In Dublin, visit Dublin Castle where the State Apartments, the Undercroft and Chapel Royal, tell over 1,000 years of Dublin’s history or take a short walk to theCustom House Visitor Centre to explore the stories behind the building, burning and restoration of this iconic Dublin landmark.
