This September the Aisling Irish Community Center will host a free suicide awareness and prevention workshop for the McLean Ave community and beyond.

Twenty-five million Americans suffer from depression each year. The best way to prevent suicide is through early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of depression and other mental health conditions. The Aisling Irish Community Center recognizes the need and is always here to assist with Free counseling and workshops.

The Aisling Center has been working in the community for almost 25 years serving those individuals and their families in need, near and far.

The planned workshop on September 25 is free and open to all. However, advanced registration is required as space is limited. To register for the workshop or to set up a meeting, contact Mary at 914-237-5121 or e-mail mary@aislingcenter.org.

Suicide can be a difficult, but necessary topic to discuss. Knowing the warning signs can provide valuable opportunities for prevention.

Depression is a precursor of suicide. If untreated, depression can get worse.  Changes in sleep or eating habits, feelings of sadness, worthlessness, hopelessness, lack of energy or desire to do things previously enjoyed, and isolating or irritability are all signs of depression.

Suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined.

- In 2014 (latest available data), there were 42,773 reported suicide deaths

- Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 15 and 64 years in the United States

- Currently, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States

- A person dies by suicide about every 12.3 minutes in the United States

- Every day, approximately 117 Americans take their own life

Some individuals might have thoughts of suicide, while others may have actually formulated a plan for suicide. Knowing that depression is treatable and one does not have to struggle with their symptoms alone is important to remember. Support can be found in the form of counseling, medication, or even hospitalization. Taking immediate action to engage in treatment is vital. Providing hope that one can and will feel better again can make all the difference.

The Aisling Irish Community Center's doors are always open to help in any way we can.

Our “Mind Yourself” mental and physical wellbeing program which includes free counseling and crisis intervention is funded by grants from the Irish Government through the Emigrant Support Program, Westchester Community Foundation, NYS Office of Children and Family Services, City of Yonkers, Westchester County, as well as business owners, organizations and individual donors who generously
