Jessie Buckley is poised to make history at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) this Sunday, February 22.

Buckley could become the first Irish actress to ever win in the Best Actress category, according to VegasInsider.com. The native of Killarney, Co Kerry, is nominated for her lead role in the critically acclaimed "Hamnet."

Meanwhile, "Hamnet," which has an impressive 11 BAFTA nominations, could also break the record for the most awards won in one evening, which is currently held by “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," which won nine awards at the 1971 ceremony.

As well as Buckley's nomination in the Leading Actress category, "Hamnet" is nominated in the Adapted Screenplay (Chloé Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell), Best Film, Costume Design (Malgosia Turzanska), Director (Chloé Zhao), Makeup and Hair (Nicole Stafford), Original Score (Max Richter), Outstanding British Film, Production Design (Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton), Supporting Actor (Paul Mescal), and Supporting Actress (Emily Watson) categories.

Adapted from the award-winning book written by Irish author Maggie O'Farrell, "Hamnet" tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, "Hamlet."

In the film, Buckley shares the screen with fellow Irish actor Paul Mescal, who is nominated for his supporting role as William Shakespeare. The two previously worked together in the 2022 film "The Lost Daughter."

Buckley has twice been nominated for a BAFTA - in 2020 for "Wild Rose" and in 2022 for "The Lost Daughter" - but has yet to bring home the award. She was also nominated in the 2019 Rising Star category, but lost out in the public vote to Letitia Wright.

The 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 22, at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London. It will be broadcast live on BBC One and iPlayer and internationally.
