The two stars share the screen in "Hamnet", which was also nominated for Best Screenplay (Motion Picture) and Best Direction.
Mescal plays a young William Shakespeare in the period drama, with Buckley playing his wife, Agnes.
The film follows the couple as they come to terms with the death of their son, Hamnet, which inspires Shakespeare to then go on and write "Hamlet".
The highly acclaimed flick is based on the book written by Derry-born author Maggie O’Farrell.
The Coleraine native also got nominated in the Best Screenplay category, alongside director Chloé Zhao.
Jessie is nominated in the Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture category, along with some very well-known faces.
The other nominees include Jennifer Lawrence ("Die My Love"), Renate Reinsve ("Sentimental Value"), Julia Roberts ("After the Hunt"), Tessa Thompson ("Hedda") and Eva Victor ("Sorry, Baby").
Meanwhile, Paul will be up against five other big names for Best Supporting Actor.
The category consists of Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn ("One Battle After Another"), Jacob Elordi ("Frankenstein"), Adam Sandler ("Jay Kelly") and Stellan Skarsgard ("Sentimental Value").

Hamnet was composed by Max Richter and is also nominated for Best Original Score.
The film with the most nominations is Paul Thomas Anderson’s "One Battle After Another". It received nine in total, including Best Picture, Director and Screenwriter.
The Norwegian film "Sentimental Value" follows with eight nominations, also including Best Picture and Screenplay. "Frankenstein" is among the Best Picture and Score nominees, with director Guillermo Del Toro getting another nod.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have meanwhile been nominated for "Wicked: For Good", which scooped many nominations itself.
Jessie and Paul will likely be eyeing up Oscar nominations next year after their recent spell of recognition. They both already received Critics' Choice Award nods last week.
"Hamnet" is due for release in Ireland early next year.
