Dublin UFC champion posts to Instagram that he was "honored" to attend the World Cup Final as the Russian president's guest.

The Dublin UFC fighter Conor McGregor set the internet alight on Sunday, during the World Cup Final, when he posted a photo himself and Vladimir Putin to his Instagram account calling him “one of the greatest leaders of our time.”

It has been quite the 30th birthday weekend for the mixed martial arts champion, McGregor, also spent time at the music festival Longitude. It was also announced this weekend that he and his girlfriend, Dee Devlin, are expecting their second child.

McGregor posted to Instagram on Sunday night that he had been invited to the FIFA 2018 World Cup Final by the Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is a judo black belt and a fan of the martial arts.

The Dubliner wrote “Today I was invited to the World Cup final as a guest of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“This man is one of the greatest leaders of our time and I was honored to attend such a landmark event alongside him.

“Today was an honor for me Mr. Putin. Thank you and congratulations on an amazing World Cup.”

McGregor even posted a little Russian saying “Россия вперёд! (Go Russia)".

Putin took time out of his evening entertaining the French President Emmaunuel Macron and the Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic to spend time with McGregor.

The Dublin fighter was also photographed at on the night with Russian Artem Lobov, an old friend and Straight Blast Gym team mate.

On Saturday night McGregor’s girlfriend, Devlin, posted to Instagram wishing him a happy 30th birthday and sharing the news of their second child. She ended the post with “Love you to bits from me, Conor jr and the bump.”

 McGregor is currently facing felony charges in New York following an incident at Brooklyn’s Barclay stadium involved UFC fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov, his team, and the team bus.

The Dubliner fighter was stripped of his UFC lightweight belt in April 2018 due to inactivity in the field. His only professional fight in the prior 20 months had been a professional boxing match with the undefeated Floyd Mayweather in August 2017.

It’s now speculated that McGregor will fight Nurmagomedov, the world’s current UFC lightweight champion.
