President Joe Biden has nominated former Mayor of Boston Marty Walsh for a position on the US Postal Service's Board of Governors.

Marty Walsh, who served as Joe Biden's Labor Secretary for two years, left the President's cabinet in February 2023 after accepting the position of executive director of the National Hockey League Players' Association.

Walsh could now return to the Biden Administration after securing a presidential nomination to serve as a governor of the US Postal Service.

The board, which consists of nine governors, describes itself as "comparable to a board of directors of a publicly held corporation". At present, seven of the nine seats on the board are filled.

"Marty Walsh has spent his life fighting for working people, as a labor leader, as a public official and as a private citizen," the White House said in a statement confirming Walsh's nomination.

The announcement added that Walsh will retain his role as head of the NHL Players' Association.

Walsh will take up a position on the board as long as he is confirmed by the US Senate.

The 56-year-old served two terms as Mayor of Boston between January 2014 and March 2021 and boasts strong ancestral links to Ireland through his parents John and Mary, who can both trace their roots back to Galway.

The White House statement confirming Walsh's nomination for the board of governors additionally praised Walsh for his background as a cancer survivor and his recovery from alcoholism.

"A survivor of Burkitt’s Lymphoma as a child, he has fought to expand access to healthcare for all," Biden said in a statement.

"Embracing recovery from alcoholism as a young man, he has always believed in compassion and second chances," he added.
