Billionaire and former Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, celebrated the opening of his new Dublin office by hosting a conference.

The conference entitled 'The Bloomberg Advantage: Future of Finance in Ireland' was held in Bloomberg's Dublin offices at One Charlemont Square.

The new offices were described by Bloomberg "as nearly our largest in the EU."

Speaking at the event, Mr. Bloomberg said he could not understand how the UK had voted to leave the EU.

He said that Brexit was the single stupidest thing any country has ever done, adding that "it's hard to believe how they did it."

"Ireland has benefited from Brexit," Mr. Bloomberg said.

He also noted the economic relationship between Ireland and the US was changing in our favour.

"Ireland is now writing a new chapter in its history, and the roles are being increasingly reversed."

"Ireland is the one that's growing, and America is the one that's worried about growth," he added.

Mr. Bloomberg pointed to the presence of major companies in Ireland, including Google and Microsoft.

"Bloomberg is certainly glad to be one of the investors here," he told delegates.

"We have 150 people in our office here now, and it's growing."

Prior to the launch, Mr. Bloomberg wrote on LinkedIn: "With Ireland leading the way in STEM graduation rates and rapidly emerging as a global hub for data, technology and financial services, it’s clear the next great chapter in Irish history is only just beginning."
