Irish women report a higher rate of gut concerns than men, at twice the rate. The research, commissioned by Yakult, revealed that 63% of Irish adults – that’s over 2.6 million people – say their digestion or gut health impacts how they feel day to day.
Feeling stressed is a big factor for people struggling with their gut health, and almost a third of people studied (31%) say that they’ve avoided work, travel, social situations or other activities because of gut issues. And TWICE as many women report daily problems with their gut.
However, even though gut issues are so prevalent, the study finds that many people still take a reactive rather than a proactive approach to looking after their gut.
However, Tiphaine Boulin, Registered Nutritionist and Science Officer at Yakult, reminds us that the gut, being home to trillions of bacteria, plays an important role in our overall wellbeing, which is why, she says, ‘looking after it should be part of a healthy lifestyle.’
Tiphaine Boulin says, ‘The fact that one in three Irish adults have avoided social situations because of digestive discomfort highlights the important role gut health can have on people’s daily lives.
While many people only think about their gut when symptoms appear, small, consistent habits such as eating a varied fiber-rich diet, enjoying fermented foods and milk drinks containing friendly bacteria, staying hydrated, prioritizing quality sleep, and managing stress can all play an important role in supporting gut health in the long term.’
In good news, the study found that Irish adults aged 25-34 are good at taking action to support gut health, including staying hydrated, eating plenty of fruit and vegetables and even including fermented food in their diet.
Other ways to encourage optimal gut health are prioritizing sleep, spending time outdoors and drinking less alcohol.
With so many Irish adults living with digestion problems but relatively few taking a proactive approach, Yakult is encouraging people to make gut health part of their everyday routine.
The findings of the research highlight the important role simple, everyday habits can play in supporting overall wellbeing. Find out more about gut health and practical ways to support it every day by visiting www.yakult.ie/gut-health.
