The trailer for "Mrs Robinson," the new biopic about Ireland's first female president Mary Robinson, was shared by Irish distribution company Break Out Pictures on May 21, Robinson's 80th birthday.
Directed by Aoife Kelleher and produced by Cormac Hargaden and Trisha Canning for Loosehorse, "Mrs Robinson" is described as a biography of an extraordinary Irishwoman told in her own words for the first time.
The new film, which was funded by Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland and the Fiscal Sponsorship programme of the Utah Film Center, examines Robinson's battles for justice and equality over half a century on the streets, in the courts, at the ballot box, and in backroom corridors of power.
Featured on the biopic's soundtrack is the song "Women of the World," specially recorded by U2 frontman Bono and Irish singer-songwriter Gemma Doherty of Saint Sister.
Co Mayo native Robinson, an Irish lawyer and politician, served as the first female President of Ireland from 1990 to 1997.
Following her presidency, she was appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, holding the position from 1997 to 2002, where she was known for her advocacy on human rights issues.
Robinson has since continued her work as a global advocate for climate justice and human rights, founding The Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice in 2010.
In 2007, she co-founded The Elders alongside Nelson Mandela and has served as the independent group's chair since 2018.
Speaking about the documentary, Robinson said “It was fantastic to work with Director Aoife Kelleher and the entire film-making team on this documentary.
"It is dedicated to Bride Rosney, who persuaded me to do it. I hope it will inspire many young people, and women in particular, to reach their full potential.”
"Mrs Robinson" will land in Irish cinemas on August 24.
