The Irish Film and Television Academy has officially unveiled the nominees for its 2026 awards ceremony. This announcement highlights a spectacular year for Irish storytelling and showcases the global reach of the nation’s creative talent.

The film "Christy" leads the field this year with an impressive 14 nominations. This Cork-set drama tells the moving story of a young man finding his independence after leaving the foster care system. The IFTA 2026 nominations include recognition for its debut director, Brendan Canty, and lead actor, Daniel Power.

Coming in a close second is the highly anticipated soccer drama "Saipan" which earned 12 nominations. The film depicts the infamous clash between Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy during the 2002 World Cup, one of the most iconic moments in Irish sporting history.

Combined, these two top films have scooped a total of 26 nominations. The Irish Times highlighted this significant achievement as a sign of the strength of the domestic film industry. Both projects are competing in the Best Film category alongside other notable works like "Aontas" and "Steve".

One of the most talked-about categories this year is Lead Actor in a Film. The competition features a rare showdown between cinematic legend Daniel Day-Lewis and popular actor Steve Coogan. Day-Lewis is nominated for his performance in "Anemone" while Coogan is recognized for his portrayal of Mick McCarthy in "Saipan".

The category also includes Oscar winner Cillian Murphy for his role in the film "Steve". Industry commentators have noted that this particular race is one of the most competitive in recent memory. Other nominees in this category include Colin Farrell for "Ballad of a Small Player" and Éanna Hardwicke for his role as Roy Keane.

The Lead Actress category is equally filled with powerhouse performers. Jessie Buckley is nominated for her work in "Hamnet," and Fionnula Flanagan earned a nod for "Four Mothers". Carrie Crowley and Fiona Shaw are also among the talented nominees recognized for their exceptional performances this year.

In the television categories, the Belfast-based drama "Blue Lights" continues its successful run with several nominations. The comedy series "The Young Offenders" also remains a favorite among the Academy members. New additions like "The Walsh Sisters" and "Trespasses" have further strengthened the diversity of Irish television programming.

Academy CEO Áine Moriarty expressed her pride in the high standard of work being produced today. She stated that this incredible showcase of work reinforces the fact that Irish talent is truly among the best in the world. Moriarty also mentioned that the Academy is eager to reward these achievements at the official ceremony.

A highlight of the upcoming event will be the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Ciarán Hinds. Hinds is being honored for his extensive and versatile career across stage and screen.

The 23rd anniversary awards ceremony is set to take place on Friday February 20 at the Dublin Royal Convention Center. Comedian and broadcaster Kevin McGahern will return to host the festivities for the second consecutive year. Fans can expect a night filled with glamour as the winners are announced to a global audience.

The international categories also feature major Hollywood stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Their inclusion demonstrates the high regard in which the Irish Film and Television Awards are held globally.
