While Coughlan skyrocketed to fame on the smash hit Channel 4 series "Derry Girls," she's also enjoyed success in her role as Penelope Featherington in Netflix's Regency-era series "Bridgerton," and more recently appeared as 'Diplomat Barbie' in the record-breaking film "Barbie."

Releasing the photos of Coughlan as a guest star in "Doctor Who," the BBC said "Nicola is now set to make a big impact when she takes a trip through time and space in this exciting undisclosed role."

Coughlan told the BBC: "I’m excited to join the Whoniverse under the leadership of the inimitable Russell T. Davies.”

Davies has become internationally famous for his "Doctor Who" scripts and as the showrunner. He's also behind the wonderful drama mini-series "It's a Sin," "A Very British Scandal," and "Queer as Folk." Davies said he was just as happy to have Coughlan sign on.

“This has been the most brilliant shoot, with Nicola lighting up the set and bringing joy,” he confirmed.

“From Derry, via Bridgerton, to the TARDIS, it’s the trip of a lifetime.”

Coughlan added: "I’ve been a fan of Ncuti Gatwa for some time and getting to share the screen with him as the Doctor has been an absolute joy.

"Sex Education's" Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the 15th Doctor with his first proper episode airing on Christmas Day, alongside Millie Gibson as companion Ruby Sunday and Indira Varma as a mysterious character called The Duchess.

Celebrating the 60th anniversary of "Doctor Who," David Tennant and Catherine Tate return as the 14th Doctor and his companion, Donna Noble with three new hour-long special episodes of Doctor Who, and the BBC has confirmed the first episode will premiere on Disney+ on 25 November.
