A double five-star rating? It sounds too good to be true, but it indicates that a property has achieved the highest level of excellence in luxury travel, recognised by Forbes Travel Guide.

Ashford Castle dates back to the 13th century and was once home to the Guinness family, a fact you'll be well aware of if you sank your teeth into House of Guinness.

It sits on the shores of Lough Corrib in Co Mayo, with Forbes Travel Guide describing its grounds as  "nothing short of epic", and we can imagine the views are heightened by a gloriously sunny day.

Ashford Castle has a total of 83 accommodations, comprising 77 guest rooms, five luxe suites, and the secluded Boathouse, which is popular among honeymooners and lovebirds.

Each accommodation has a "generously-proportioned bathroom", which is outfitted with Connemara Marble and organic Voya products — think ultimate relaxation.

Aside from accommodation, Ashford Castle also plays host to a spectacular restaurant, a medieval-style pub, and a Victorian tea room.

The interior is a beautiful mirror of the exterior, oozing old-world charm with original features such as grand staircases, antiques, and rich tapestries.

If you're more of a get-up-and-go staycationer, there are plenty of activities to try your hand at, including boat cruises, fishing trips, and horse riding.

If all else fails, though, take a trip to the award-winning spa, which is the only Forbes Travel Guide five-star spa in Ireland.

Ashford Castle’s Managing Director, Niall Rochford, said: "We’re in seventh heaven but will never take a top Forbes ranking for granted", adding that the whole team is "overjoyed" with the achievement.

Mr Rochford said: "A Forbes Five-Star ranking is earned through the collective passion, pride, and commitment of our people, and I know that the recognition is personal to each member of the Ashford Castle family.

"Such a distinguished acknowledgement speaks to the extraordinary and consistent care the team brings to each guest experience, and retaining such a prestigious accolade reflects the warm and professional hospitality that defines Ashford Castle."

Ashford Castle became Ireland's first hotel to achieve a five-star ranking in the annual honours list in 2020. It has retained its Forbes Travel Guide five-star ranking for a seventh successive year.
