NYPD 1-11
CIE 0-8
THE last game of the day was the NYPD playing another selection from the CIE traveling team. This time the CIE outfit came out second best, but they will certainly be very happy with their trip to the Big Apple.
They stayed at the Army Base in Staten Island where they had a full time security detail and as John Cassidy, a Donegal native who was part of their backroom staff said, they had tremendous attention paid to them by both the Fire Department and Police Department which they will forever be thankful for.
Some old friends also were met in Gaelic Park, with Sean Scollan from Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim, a former CIE player, on hand. He played for them in 1944 and also represented Leitrim in an All-Ireland junior final. He then played senior for Leitrim before immigrating to New York. He lined out for New York versus Cork in the national in '52.
Another friend on hand with the traveling team, Tom Kitt from Mountbellew, was a teammate of Enda Colleran when their club won the county title in '65.
Now for the game. New York made a great start with a point from Robbie Moran that he quickly followed with a goal after good work by Aiden Power and John Walsh.
CIE's opening score was a point that Dave Byrne scored after a good run. New York continued to control the tempo of the game and were a little unlucky to see a four man move that worked the ball the length of the field get parried away for a 50.
They had a similar chance two minutes later, but a CIE defender got back in time to stop a certain goal. Dave McCarthy had CIE's second point, but over the next 10 minutes they missed some close in frees to tie the game.
Kevin Dooley cut the lead to two points when he joined the attack to fire one over. Two points from McCarthy did level the game as we entered the final few minutes of the first half.
New York had another goal chance when sub Brendan Heaps climbed high to catch and fire at goal, but the CIE keeper was alert to the danger and again parried away to safety.
New York again took command in the last few minutes led by Kevin McGeeney, who fired over two good points to bring the half to a close with a three point advantage 1-4 to 0-4.
The contest continued to be very keen as the second half got underway. Both sides had an early point before Moran pushed New York lead to five points.
CIE answered again, and this time Dave Donoghue was on hand to send over a fine point. Moran was again in the right place to push New York's lead to five.
It should have been more two minutes after when New York looked to have goaled, but as he was doing all match long CIE goalkeeper Peter Curran pulled off a brilliant save.
James Mitchell joined New York's attack to score a point before McCarthy replied for the visitors to make it 1-8 to 0-8 in New York's favor.
That was as close as the visitors would get. New York finished with a flourish, and three unanswered points from Walsh, Power and man of the match Moran sealed the win for New York.
