Police say the investigation into the deadly Edenderry house fire has intensified after four people were detained in the Midlands. The case centers on the December blaze that killed four-year-old Tadhg Farrell and his great-aunt Mary Holt.
Three men and a teenage boy were arrested as part of the investigation. The arrests included three men, two in their 20s and one in his 30s, plus a juvenile in his teens. All four were being held at Garda (police) stations in the Midlands under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.
The fire happened at Castleview Park, in Edenderry, on the evening of December 6, 2025. The Irish Times reported that the victims died in a suspected petrol bomb attack and said their remains were found in the front room of the house “where the fire was deliberately started.”
The arrests have renewed attention on one of the most disturbing cases to come out of Co. Offaly in recent months. BreakingNews.ie reported that the child had been visiting his grandmother and great-aunt when the home was attacked shortly before 7:45 p.m., and that the child’s grandmother suffered serious burn injuries.
The investigation has also been described by gardaí as ongoing. A Garda spokesperson said, “Investigations are ongoing,” after confirming that a fourth male, a juvenile in his teens, had been arrested late Tuesday night.
The case has drawn wider public attention because of the ages of the victims and the violence alleged in the attack. Investigators previously released CCTV footage that appeared to show two hooded individuals smashing a window before setting an object on fire and throwing it into the property.
