Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and wartime thriller 1917 were the big film winners at the 2020 Golden Globes on Sunday night but Irish star Saoirse Ronan, nominated for her role in Little Women had a disappointment in the acting category.

County Carlow raised Ronan was nominated for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama but Renée Zellweger won the coveted gong for her role in the biopic Judy.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took home the award for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) with Tarantino winning Best Screenplay and Brad Pitt winning Best Supporting Actor.

The World War One drama, 1917, won the Best Picture (Drama) Award and Best Director for Sam Mendes.

Mendes dedicated his Best Director award to his grandfather, Alfred Hubert Mendes, whose stores of the war inspired the movie.

"He signed up for the First World War, he was aged 17," Mendes said in his acceptance. "And I hope he's looking down on us. And I hope, I fervently hope, it never, ever happens again."  

Joaquin Phoenix took home the award for Best Actor for his role in Joker. While the unnerving movie also won a gong for Best Score, by composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. 

Laura Dern won Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story. The Netflix-made  Scarlett Johansson, Adam Driver movie led the nominations with six, but Dern's was the only gong it took home on Sunday night. 

In the television categories, The Crown, Fleabag, and Chernobyl were among the winners. Olivia Coleman, who plays Queen Elizabeth in the Crown won Best Actress in a Drama Series. Fleabag's star and creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge was honored with Best Comedy Series and the Best Actress award. Other big wins on the night included Chernobyl for Best Limited Series and Succession for Best Drama.

Tom Hanks was honored with the Cecil B DeMille Award for his contribution to the film industry. Ellen DeGeneres was honored with the Carol Burnett Award for her work in television.
