The director of the hotly anticipated "Devil Wears Prada 2" has revealed how Ireland’s most famous golfer ended up making a cameo appearance.

Freshly minted Masters champion Rory McIlroy made headlines when it emerged the golfing superstar appears as himself in the new movie.

And it seems so does his glamorous wife Erica, but the mystery of how it came together has finally been explained.

Speaking on the red carpet, director David Grantel revealed that Rory was his favorite celebrity cameo in the film.

He described him not just as a "good sport" but also as "a very good actor".

It turns out, the six-time major champion has a slight history with the film, having watched it the night before his triumph at the Players in March last year.

Speaking about his pre-game preparations at the time, McIlroy said: "I just tried to forget about it, had some room service, watched a bit of Devil Wears Prada, and went to bed".

It was that insight that prompted Grantel to get in touch to see if he would be interested in being in the movie.

"The one I was most excited for will surprise people, it’s not even in the world of fashion. I mean, I loved having Rory McIlroy. He was a great sport and a very good actor.

"You know it was triggered because last year, right before he won the Players’ Championship, the press asked him how did you relax the night before you won this tournament?

"He watched 'The Devil Wears Prada'. I knew we had a fan,’" he told Metro Entertainment.

The "Devil Wears Prada 2" is set for release on May 1, 20 years after the original movie. It will star Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.
