Ireland’s recently-instated Consul General to Texas and the south-western US has visited San Antonio for the first time.
Melinda Britten, Vice President of The Harp and Shamrock Society of Texas, welcomed Texas Consul General Adrian Farrell on his first visit to San Antonio for the society’s annual Christmas dinner.
Recognizing the growth and economic impact of this part of the country, Ireland recently opened a consulate in Austin, making it the only EU country to have a consulate in Texas' capital city.
Ireland has consulates in New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Atlanta. Consul General Farrell attended Trinity College in Dublin and has worked with the Irish foreign Ministry since 1998, serving in Turkey and Germany. One of the aims of the consulate in Austin is to help Irish firms win business and attract more foreign direct investment from Texas.
In his remarks, Consul General Farrell recognized the Harp and Shamrock Society and the Irish community in San Antonio for having “contributed so much to building San Antonio and Texas.”
“The Harp and Shamrock Society has been doing this magnificent work for over 48 years now, with events including the South Texas Alamo Irish Festival and the Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day party. One of my New Year’s resolutions for 2015 is to visit San Antonio more often.”
Consul General Farrell was the guest of Past President Joan Moody.
