The Republic of Ireland soccer team are set to play a friendly game against the World and European champions, Spain, at the New York Yankee Stadium, on June 11.

The Irish team will play before a possible crowd of 50,000 at the Bronx Stadium. The Yankees will also play host to Manchester City v Chelsea on May 25

Last summer the Yankee’s stadium hosted its first soccer matches when Chelsea took on Paris Saint-Germain to a crowd of 38,000 and Real Madrid played against AC Milan with a crowd of 49,474.

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni said he was looking forward to the game. He told RTE “Our team is in evolving and showing a lot of promise. The recent games demonstrated that our players have serious potential.

"Matches against opposition like England, Georgia and Spain are very helpful to that development and great preparation for our important competitive fixtures in June, September and October.”

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) confirmed that this New York match would be the last of four consecutive fixtures from the end of May onwards.

The Irish teams are set to play England at Wembley, in London, on May 29, followed by a friendly against Georgia, in Dublin on June 1 and a home qualifier against the Faroe Islands on June 7.

This New York match will be the second of two fixtures this summer at Yankee Stadium following Chelsea v Manchester City on May 25.

Tickets are available at www.Yankees.com and www.FAI.ie.

The game will take place at 1am Irish time (8pm ET).
