Shay Given and Caleb Folan both turned up to the Republic of Ireland training camp carrying knocks.

Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni was quick to state at a press conference on Tuesday that he had already decided not to use both players for Friday's friendly with Nigeria before learning of their injuries.

Folan is struggling with a knee injury, while Given has a hip complaint. Trapattoni has afforded them some extra rest with the hope that they will be fit in time for next week's World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria.

"Caleb [Folan] is a little sore but on Monday he will come back to the squad to prepare for the Bulgaria game," said Trapattoni.

"He just needs two or three days rest. But we will be okay for Friday as we also have Leon Best.

"Shay took a knock but I already said last time that I wanted to have a look at other goalkeepers."

The absence of both players for Friday's friendly means that Coventry City pair Kieren Westwood and Leon Best could be in line to make their senior debuts.
