Irish names are beloved in Ireland, which makes sense, and there are so many to choose from. Whether you want an unusual Irish name, a popular one, or an Irish name that’s easy to pronounce, you will be able to find one to your taste.

In fact, the top 10 boy and girl names chosen in Ireland last year feature numerous Irish names – which is lovely to see.

And not only that, Irish names have also begun to gain popularity across the pond, too. Liam has been the most popular name for baby boys for the past number of years and Maeve is also seeing a rise in popularity too.

Irish name trending in the US

According to Nameberry, multiple Irish names are trending in the US at the moment, and one in particular is so rare in Ireland that it could be an ideal choice if you are searching for a name.

The name is Callahan or Callaghan (the second of which is a more traditional Irish spelling) and it has made the trending list on Nameberry.

The name Callaghan means "bright-headed" or "descendant of Ceallachán" and is also related to the popular surname O’Callaghan.

But while the name is trending across the water, it is still very unusual here in Ireland. In fact, no records currently exist for the Callahan spelling, and Callaghan was given to fewer than three baby boys in 2025.

But we think it’s time for this name to gain popularity here in Ireland too, it’s so cute and unique and could be a lovely way to pay tribute to a relative with the surname O’Callaghan!

Other Irish names that are trending at the moment include:

  • Cillian
  • Maeve
  • Ronan
