Many modern parents want their child to have a "unique" name that sets them out from the crowd. There are more and more names to choose from now that we have the Internet to deliver us names from far-flung places we may never have thought of.
However, Irish parents have a strong grá for Irish names – the latest name charts list SIX Irish boys’ names in the top ten – and given the fact that there is not an infinite pool of them, we accept that our little Ríans, Liams, Fiadhs and Éabhas, will likely have a couple of friends in their lifetime that share their name.
The spread of names globally goes all ways, of course, and some Irish names are blowing up in different parts of the world.
While Irish names like Sean and Liam are so popular now, people may have even forgotten they are Irish; some parents would still consider the more recent additions as "unique". However, this teacher is informing mums and dads that the name they hope may be a bit ‘different’ for their child may not be as unusual as they think.
The teacher went viral on TikTok recently for calling out some of these names, including Willow for girls and Beau for boys, which might sound a little unique, but are actually pretty mainstream.
The Irish girl’s name on the list honestly didn’t surprise us. It has exploded in popularity over recent years and is frequently heard on our fair isle and over the Atlantic (not to mention the Irish Sea) as well.
It’s Maeve, which currently sits at 76 in the top 100 names list in the US (in the year 2000, it ranked at number 778!)
It’s a great name, and we don’t blame any parent for choosing it for their little girl. As the teacher, Abbie, says, "If you love these names, go ahead and use them." She just warned against them if the parents were hoping for something "completely different."
