In the year that the Xerox was invented, the baby boy's name, John, was topping the charts, which had been sitting at first place since 1964, when data was first recorded. Taking the same route, Mary held the number one spot for girls’ names in 1973, as it had done in the previous nine years.
As the years passed, these names slowly fell out of popularity, with only 36 baby girls named Mary being born last year compared to 1529 babies born in 1973. John also took a plunge in popularity, dropping down to the 31st most popular name in 2023.
With plenty of familiar names on the list, Michael and Patrick took the number two and three spots respectively with the names Thomas and Brian also making up the top ten.
In a year that saw John and Yoko and Wizzard topping the Irish singles charts, 785 baby girls named Catherine were born and 686 Margarets were welcomed into the world!
