PepsiCo have announced a new initiative for farmers which involves a web-based crop management system.
The new system called i-crop is being developed with Cambridge University. PepsiCo is aiming to reduce English farmers water use and carbon emission output by around 50percent over the next five years.
According to the company the new crop management system will allow farmers around the world to manage and reduce their water use and carbon emmissions while allowing them to maximize the potential yield.
Richard Evans, president of PepsiCo UK and Ireland, said: “Farming is in the DNA of our business - we rely on fresh produce every day. Finding ways to produce more food with less environmental impact is essential to our future ... i-crop has the potential to revolutionise the way we farm, enabling our farmers to save costs and water and carbon consumption, while at the same time improving their yields.”
PepsiCo incorporates hundreds of brands throughout the world including Pepsi, Tropicana, Ocean Spray, Lay's potato chips, Gatorade and Quaker Oatmeal. With 19 differnt product lines the global company generates revenues of nearly $60 billion.
