The Flatley Foundation of Braintree, MA has offered Friends of the Orphans a generous donation of $1 million dollars to be used for a matching gift campaign until December 31st, 2012.
Over the past three years "Irish Hearts for Haiti", a grassroots fundraising effort by the Irish-American Community in the Boston area, has raised over $200K to support the work by Friends of the Orphans in Haiti. Winnie Henrey, one of the founders of Irish Hearts for Haiti said of the donation "We are over the top with excitement with the help that Friends of the Orphans is receiving from The Flatley Foundation."
The Flatley Foundation is a legacy of Co. Mayo native and self-made billionaire and philanthropist, Thomas Flatley, who passed away in 2008. Flatley, a Boston area real estate developer, appeared at #606 on the 2006 Forbes List of Richest People.
Friends of the Orphans, through its support of the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”) homes and their outreach programs in nine Latin American and Caribbean countries, is dedicated to transforming the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children. Together, Friends of the Orphans and NPH create families for life, enabling children to transcend poverty and grow into caring, productive members of their communities. Since its founding in 1954, NPH has raised nearly 16,000 children and currently cares for more than 3,600 in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru.
The Flatley family has seen how Friends of the Orphans is helping NPH transform lives and they hope that this gift will encourage others to give generously and help establish a support base in New England. Mary Margaret Flatley Darling and Patricia Flatley both shared that because of the many stories they have heard over the years about the children that Friends of the Orphans supports, that there was no way they could say no. They hope this gift will inspire others to donate to help the children.
