Higgins is in St James’ Hospital in Dublin, where he is receiving antibiotic treatment.

On Monday, it was confirmed that the President’s condition had improved, but he would remain in the hospital to continue the course of antibiotics.

Higgins was reportedly in good spirits and was feeling well.

The 84-year-old travelled to the hospital by arrangement on Sunday and stayed in overnight for the last two nights.

Last year, Higgins spent several days in St James’ Hospital as a precaution to monitor his blood pressure.

At the time, the President thanked the public for the "outpouring" of support he had received.

Higgins later revealed that he had suffered a mild stroke.

Afterwards, a spokesperson said: ‘Ireland is lucky to have such wonderful, dedicated and caring medical staff.

"The President continued to carry out his constitutional duties while in hospital and this week considered and signed two pieces of legislation."

Higgins has just over two more weeks in his role as President of Ireland, as Catherine Connolly takes over the role on November 11.

The Independent candidate enjoyed a resounding victory over Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys on Saturday with 63% of the first preference votes going to the Galway woman.

A statement from Higgins released on Saturday congratulated the President-elect.

He said: "I have this evening spoken by telephone with the President-elect, Catherine Connolly.

"I congratulated the President-elect on her election as the tenth President of Ireland on what is a momentous day for her and her family.

"The President-elect will have the full support of this office as she prepares for her Inauguration next month."
