Martin O’Malley, the Irish American former governor of Maryland, is set to make an announcement about his intentions for the 2016 presidential race on May 30.
O’Malley’s aides, speaking anonymously, shared the news of his impending announcement in a conference call yesterday.
The Washington Post reports that the aides said O’Malley is “inclined to run but to remain somewhat circumspect about his intentions. Were he to tell them outright that he plans to enter the race, he could trigger a 15-day window that would require him to file candidacy papers before May 30.”
This week he made appearances in New Hampshire, the first primary state.
Currently, the field of Democratic competitors is populated by Hillary Rodham Clinton and Vermont senator Bernie Sanders. There is speculation that former Rhode Island governor and US Senator Lincoln Chafee and former Virginia senator James Webb are considering entering the race.
Last year, Clinton reportedly told O’Malley to ‘do what he needs to do’ for the 2016 election.
It has been widely suggested that O’Malley will enter the race, but that he would also be a key contender for Clinton’s VP.
That would be a very strong White House ticket for Irish America.
