Laurence ‘Larry’ Maher, formerly of Co Kilkenny and Co Tipperary, tragically died in a car accident in Maine in the US on Tuesday, October 24.
Maher, 45, died at the scene of the car crash that happened just before 9 am on Tuesday on Old Orchard Road in Bruxton, Maine, police said.
According to News Center Maine, police said a preliminary investigation found that the vehicle Maher was driving left the roadway and hit a large pine tree. The investigation is ongoing.
A post on RIP.ie says that Maher was formerly of Ballyline, Callan, Co Kilkenny and Rossane, Cloneen, Co Tipperary.
Maher is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth, his adored daughters Ciara, Ava, and Saoirse, his loving parents Larry and Marry, his sisters Breda (Kelly), Sinead (O’Shea), and Siobhán (Carrigan), his grandfather Mickey Holden, his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, parents-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as the extended Maher and Veroneau families and a wid e circle of friends.
The notice on RIP.ie said that Maher's funeral will take place in Maine, with arrangements to be announced later, and that a Memorial Mass will be celebrated in Ireland at a later date.
A GoFundMe to support Maher’s family has already exceeded its goal of $10,000 after being launched less than a day ago.
"His impact on the community was boundless and he will be forever missed," the GoFundMe, organized by Megan Diffley, says.
The Scarborough Soccer Club in Maine paid tribute to Maher, who coached with the organization, in a social media post, saying: "Larry Mahrer was a generous, kind soul, a wonderful father, and a dedicated teacher of the beautiful game.
"He gave tirelessly of his time and was at his happiest with his girls on a soccer pitch. He touched so many of us and will be forever missed.
"He coached two teams for our club this year and all three of his beautiful daughters are former or current club players."
In Ireland, the Graigue Ballycallan GAA Club in Co Kilkenny offered its sincere condolences upon Maher's passing.
