Limerick's own Oscar nominee told Colbert she's a "shy attention seeker"... who knew there was such a thing!

It's possible that actors can be shy when they’re away from the camera…at least that’s what Oscar nominee Ruth Negga says.

Ruth, born in Ethiopia to an Irish mother and Ethiopian father, moved back to her mother’s hometown in Limerick when she was four.  She’s had an acclaimed acting career, including a Best Actress Oscar nomination last year for Loving, and a starring role on the popular AMC series Preacher which debuted its third season on Sunday night.

Ruth visited Stephen Colbert last week to discuss the show and her career. And when the host paid tribute to her pretty couture dress with dragons on it she replied, “I try and hide the fact I’m lacking in a personality by wearing dragon prints. I suppose fashion is an armor for nerves.”

Colbert wondered if his guest was shy away from the spotlight. “Most definitely. If you felt my heart now it’s going like the clappers!” she laughed.

“I suppose I’m a shy attention seeker.  I suppose I’m a wallflower in real life but acting creates a very safe space where you can draw attention to you.”

Ruth stars in Preacher with Dominic Cooper, her former long-term boyfriend. They split earlier this year after eight years together. Seems to have been an amicable parting, as they were pictured at the season three premiere party for Preacher in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago happily posing for pics.

Ruth will head home to Ireland for her next big project, the starring role in the Gate Theatre’s fall production of Hamlet, which will be part of the 2018 Dublin Theatre Festival.
