A man and his daughter, who had both been living in Ireland, were found dead in their room at the Edition Hotel in Reykjavík, Iceland, on Saturday morning, June 14, local police have confirmed.
A woman - the man's wife and the daughter's mother - was arrested at the scene and is in custody, Ævar Pálmi Pálmason, deputy chief superintendent of the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police’s central division, told local outlet RÚV on Monday.
The woman sustained serious injuries, Pálmason noted, though he declined to say if they were self-inflicted or defense wounds.
Pálmason said that the trio, whose names have not been released, were French residents, though they had been living in Ireland.
They had arrived in Iceland on June 7 for their holiday; their return flight was booked for the day the man and daughter were found dead.
RTÉ News reported on Monday that Icelandic police confirmed that the French Embassy was immediately contacted upon discovery of the bodies, though it is understood that police have not contacted the Irish consulate.
On Saturday morning, police said that they had been called to a hotel in Reykjavík's city centre at 8 am due to a "serious incident."
In an update later on Saturday, police said that two foreign tourists were found dead in the hotel.
A third person, also a foreign tourist, was discovered at the scene with injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical attention.
In a subsequent update, police confirmed that a French woman in her 60s had been remanded in custody by the Reykjavík District Court until Friday, June 20, in relation to the investigation of the deaths of two French tourists at a hotel in Reykjavík's city centre.
The woman in custody was traveling with the deceased when the case arose, police said.
Reporting on the manslaughter, CBS News / AFP has noted: "Murders and deadly violence are rare in Iceland, with the country regularly ranked at the top of the Global Peace Index thanks to its low crime rates, though gang crime has been on the rise in recent years.
"According to Statista, Iceland has one of the lowest murder rates in Europe - only two persons were killed on the island in 2021."
