With the news that Universal Pictures won the bidding war for the rights to produce the film version of the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ trilogy, gossip is flying as to whether or not Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will claim the two lead roles. ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ originated as a piece of fan-fiction based on - you guessed it - the ‘Twilight’ saga.

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ began modestly on FanFiction.net under the title ‘Master of the Universe,’ a sort of spin-off of the ‘Twilight’ series. After the story’s popularity exploded online, it was picked up for ebooks and independent publishing. Again, it experienced a healthy popularity and Random House won the rights to re-publish the trilogy that now resides on several best-seller lists.

Written by EL James, the erotic trilogy has been deemed “mommy porn” and “not safe for work” due to its heavy sexual plotlines. In the story, a virginal college student, Ana, is whisked away into her older and richer boyfriend’s, Christian Grey, fantasy world of sexual domination.

With Universal Pictures winning the coveted rights to produce the film, speculation as to who will be cast in the leading roles is at a high point. Many are calling for Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson to take the roles, while others wonder if doing so would force them to be forever type-cast into “couples” roles.

Yesterday, Stewart was asked if she heard about ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’

“It’s funny — I heard about it yesterday. Rob [Pattinson] and Wyck [Godrey], our producer, were talking about it. I’ve heard it’s quite sexy, very titillating,” Stewart said.

Will she read the trilogy? “Hell yeah!” she replied.

The news of a film version for the trilogy comes when both Stewart and Pattinson are gearing up for the promotion of their own films. Pattinson has ‘Bel Ami’ and ‘Cosmopolis’ due on this year, and Stewart has ‘Snow White and The Huntsman’ premiering this year. Of course, the final installment of the Twilight saga is due out in November as well.

Have you read ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’? Who do you think should be cast in the roles of Ana and Christian?
