Ireland is home to over 7,000 pubs, according to a new study.

A report by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI), which was authored by DCU Economist Anthony Foley, states that Ireland has 7,193 pubs, as well as 3,161 off-licenses, 2,406 restaurants, and 983 hotels.

The report aims to examine “the economic, social and cultural contribution of the drinks and hospitality sector across Ireland,” and how that sector plays a vital role in rural communities and contributes to local economies throughout Ireland.

The findings show that the drinks and hospitality sector pays €2.9 billion in wages and helps deliver €6.4 billion in tourism spend each year.

The study seeks to highlight how Ireland’s high alcohol excise tax, which is the second highest in the EU, behind Finland, risks jobs and discourages tourists from visiting the country, particularly from Great Britain.

The report also breaks down the number of pubs, hotels and restaurants in each constituency in the country (see below). The full report can be found here.
