Rory Mcilroy hit one of the longest drives ever hit on Thursday at the Scottish Open where he holds the first round lead.

On the 436 yard 13th hole McIlroy pulled out his driver and hit the longest shot this year in any professional golf tournament and one of the longest in history.

As you watch the video observe the camera tries to pick up his ball a 100 yards or so short of the hole, which in itself would be a monster drive.

The commentators then express astonishment at the length of the drive, which rolled onto the green while the golfers ahead watch in amazement.

The hole was playing downwind but even so McIlroy is beginning to show signs that his recent love problems are behind him and he is getting back to his best.

Afterwards he had fun with the other golfers tweeting that it was a mere 3 wood – as against a driver – that he hit.
