Irish actor Pierce Brosnan has been cast in the film adaptation of the hugely popular crime novel series "The Thursday Murder Club."

Brosnan, who was raised in Co Meath, will star opposite Helen Mirren and Ben Kingsley in the new film, series author Richard Osman announced on his podcast "The Rest is Entertainment" on April 22.

Speaking on his podcast, Osman described Brosnan's character Ron Ritchie as a "leftwing bruiser ex-trade union official."

He said: "Ron is going to be played by, I'm gonna say, the most handsome man in the world, so he's going to have to dumb himself down a bit.

"Ron is going to be played by Pierce Brosnan."

Reacting, Osman's cohost Marina Hyde gushed: "Oh my god, I can't wait to see what he's going to do with it [the role]."

Osman said Mirren will play former spy Elizabeth Bres and Kingsley will play ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim Arif, while negotiations for an actress to play Joyce Meadowcroft are underway.

According to Deadline, "The story follows a group of geriatric friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun, but find themselves caught in a real case."

Osman also announced that Chris Columbus, who directed "Home Alone" and two of the "Harry Potter" films, will direct and write the film adaptation that's being produced by Stephen Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment.

The debut novel in Osman's series became the "fastest-selling adult crime debut in recorded history" when it was released in 2020, according to the Guardian.

Osman has since released three more novels in the series, which take place in the Cooper's Chase retirement home in the fictitious English village of Fairhaven in Kent. A fifth novel in the series is due to be released later in the year.

Osman added that "lots more casting" would be announced in the coming weeks, stating that filming will take place in Britain from the end of June until September.

"Mirren, Kingsley, Brosnan - I can see the poster now," Osman said.

Brosnan, meanwhile, was recently announced to have joined the cast of "Giant," where he will play Irish boxing legend Brendan Ingle.
