The cult-classic horror movie will get a new lease of life, focusing on the traditional Irish mythology and Freddy Krueger-style kills.

The US TV station, SYFY, has announced, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, that they are releasing a new installment of everyone’s favorite Irish-themed horror movie, “The Leprechaun”. They will release “Leprechaun Returns” in March 2019.

The movie will pick up 25 years after the 1993 original. In the 1990s horror cult-classic followed the Irish mythical creature the Leprechaun who is doing whatever it takes to retrieve is pot of gold, even commit gruesome murders. Jennifer Aniston played Tory Redding, in the original, who finally defeats the leprechaun by shoving a four-leave clover down his throat (nice!)

The new movie, “Leprechaun Returns”, takes up in present day. A group of sorority girls unwittingly awaken the Leprechaun while they tear down a cabin to build a new sorority house. Oh my.

“Leprechaun Returns” was written by Suzanne Keilly (“Ash vs Evil Dead”) and directed by Steven Kostanski (“The Void”). It’s set to star Taylor Spreitler (“Kevin Can Wait”) as Lila, Pepi Sonuga (“Ash vs Evil Dead”) as Katie, Sai Bennett (“Lake Placid: Legacy”) as Rose. Linden Porco will play the Leprechaun, who was originally played by Warwick Davis, who starred in “Star Wars”, “Willow” and “Harry Potter”.

It’s hard to believe but this will be the seventh incarnation of the Leprechaun! So far there’s been “Leprechaun” (1993), “Leprechaun 2” (1994), “Leprechaun 3” (1995), “Leprechaun 4: In Space” (1997), “Leprechaun in the Hood” (2000), “Leprechaun: Back 2 tha Hood” (2003), and “Leprechaun: Origins” (2014).

Were you a fan of the original? Will you be watching the new Leprechaun movie next St. Patrick’s Day?
