The first photos from Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated Little Women, starring Saoirse Ronan and Meryl Streep, are here.

Saoirse Ronan, who also starred in Gerwig’s 2018 Oscar-nominated Lady Bird, plays Jo March in the latest adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel.

Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen play sisters Meg, Amy, and Beth; Laura Dern is Marmee, and Meryl Streep plays the sisters’ wealthy Aunt March.

Timothée Chalamet (who also starred in Lady Bird) plays the girls’ heartthrob neighbor Laurie.

Vanity Fair recently offered an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the costumes and on-location set in Massachusetts, where Alcott and her three sisters grew up. Gerwig relied on paintings and art from the era to get the film's look and wove details from Alcott’s letters and diaries into the script.

While Gerwig based Lady Bird on her own life, Little Women, a book she grew up with and loved, feels even more personal.

“This feels like autobiography,” Gerwig told Vanity Fair. “When you live through a book, it almost becomes the landscape of your inner life. … It becomes part of you, in a profound way.”

Gerwig said that she sees Ronan as not just her lead actor but also an essential filmmaking collaborator.

“I’m so blessed to work with [Saoirse] twice,” Gerwig said. “She’s such a filmmaker as an actor. She’s like a barometer of … that truth that rings true.”

Little Women will be released in theaters on December 25.
