Well, it's St Patrick's Week, so we're kicking off with a traditional Irish tune by The Gloaming (if you don't fall in love with this, we'll have to question your DNA).
The Gloaming (Clare, Cork, Dublin, Chicago, New York)
Crowned as having the best Irish album of 2014, beating U2, Hozier and Sinead O'Conner amongst many other great albums, The Gloaming are a traditional music supergroup. The New Yorker has remarked that "[The Gloaming] moves the music of Ireland in captivating new directions". We love them and we hope you do too. 3/5 of the band are from Ireland, and 2/5 from the USA - a perfect #PLAYIRISHUSA artist!
Delorentos (Dublin)
Dublin based Delorentos are currently being hailed as one of Ireland's finest and most imaginative bands. They play their biggest live show this week in Dublin's Vicar Street. Ró (vocals, guitar, piano), Kier (vocals, guitar), Níal (backing vocals) and Ross (drums, backing vocals), and are well loved gents of the Irish music industry. In 2013 they won the Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year for 'Little Sparks' and were nominated again last year, losing out to The Gloaming!
The Coronas (Dublin)
Dublin rock band The Coronas have just played to 15,000 in Dublin's 3 Arena (previously The O2). They are renowned for their live shows and have become famous for their Christmas gigs in Dublin's Olympia Theatre playing a record breaking six nights there in 2011. Fact of the Day: Singer Danny O'Reilly is Mary Black's son ( I know I know, we give you all the goss…).
Moscow Metro (Limerick)
Described as post punk revival/shoe gaze, they take inspiration from every aspect of life including films, writers, art; the band’s influences are diverse, from The National to Blade Runner, Walt Whitman to The Cure. ‘Spirit Of A City’ explores several dark themes; feeling trapped by your situation, death and loss, social tensions and escaping the aftermath of a failed relationship.
Inni-K (Kildare)
Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Inni-K 's music has been rooted in traditional music & song from an early age, Inni-K embraces her rich heritage whilst simultaneously branching out to explore her own unique voice and delightfully fresh indie-folk sound.
Cronin (Longford)
More siblings! Cronin is the new musical project from Irish brothers Jonathon and Michael Cronin. Leaving Ireland in the last recession on the early 90's to live in the North of England shaped their musical influences, style and aspirations. Since returning to Ireland 10 years ago they have released acclaimed singles and albums under the moniker The Aftermath and featured music on 2 major motion pictures amongst other things. They make music in their own Transmission Rooms recording studio that is based in a rural setting in the middle of Ireland.
Monster Monster (Dublin)
In December Liverpool Football Club heard the Monster Monster tune, Christmas in Liverpool. The club loved the tune and played it at all their games in Anfield over Christmas. As far as Mick, (songwriter and life-long Liverpool fan) is concerned, this is 'the best thing that has EVER happened!'. The story was picked up by the major papers and blogs in Liverpool and Ireland. The song also went on to win Christmas FM's Best New Song competition and was played heavily on many Irish and UK radio stations.
Janet Devlin (Tyrone, Northern Ireland)
20 year old Northern Irish singer-songwriter Janet Devlin thrived on a diet of watching Kerrang! TV and taking regular bus rides to local record stores in nearby Omagh.
Fuelled by a love of bands like Foo Fighters and Red Hot Chili Peppers and inspired by their songwriting, hidden away in her parents’ shed she taught herself to play instruments by ear and penned her own songs where nobody else could hear her sing. In 2011, she caught the public’s attention on Series 8 of the UK's X Factor, where she consistently received the highest consecutive public vote out of all the contestants.
Rainy Boy Sleep (Donegal)
Rainy Boy Sleep AKA Stevie Martin has had a very interesting year. Best Solo Act nomination in the Northern Irish Music Awards, loved by Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, James Morrison and Cyndi Lauper,
“The best/scariest thing about the Cyndi Lauper tour was getting to sing ‘Time After Time’ with her in front of 3,500 people at the Hammersmith Apollo. To go from tiny club shows where it was just me and my guitar to that was insane – but good insane! Seeing big audiences connect with you like that is such an amazing feeling.”
Vann Music (Dublin)
As I'm writing this, Boy is the No.1 single in Ireland, so that's enough reason to play it!
Their brand new EP ‘Running’ was produced by industry veteran Stephen Hague, who has worked with the likes of New Order and The Pet Shop Boys. They have garnered a solid and loyal fan-base thanks to their extremely catchy collection of tracks including the infectious, synth-based ‘Tina’, which reached No. 7 in the Irish AirPlay charts and is still receiving heavy rotation on nationwide radio.
