WITH the senior divisions of both the Ladies and Men's GAA divisions finished for the year, it is again the chance of the minor Boards of both the girls and boys of New York to avail of the opportunity to use Gaelic Park. While the Minor Board will have semifinals and finals at the Mecca next weekend, the Ladies GAA and Gaelic4 Girls hosted a tremendous tournament of football this past weekend with the New York Ladies Invitational Blitz.
Despite rain on Saturday, enthusiasm was not dampened with a full slate of games before the finals went ahead on Sunday with the under-17 championship going down to the wire in a brilliant game of football.
Overall there were games in all age groups from under-8 to under-17 with a shortened pitch for the younger children with the full field availed off from under-12s up.
What made the weekend extra special was the visit of three clubs from Ireland for the competition with Geraldine's, (Arklow, Co. Wicklow), Ballylanders (Co. Limerick) and Cahir (Co. Tipperary) all participating.
With organizers Joe McGirl, Eugene Brophy, Mary Murphy and Nollaig Cleary and their hardworking committees and volunteers all helping to make the weekend a tremendous success, it certainly will lock itself in as an annual event on the calendar that can not be missed.
Next up for the hardworking people behind the scenes in the Ladies GAA is the annual dinner dance at the Royal Regency on Tuckahoe Road on November 17. Guest of honor is Sean McEvoy (Cavan) with the Collette Horkan Memorial Award honoree Margaret Kelly (nee Chambers), (Fermanagh). Player of the year is Mary (Molly) O'Rourke form Na Fianna.
