WITH the club season winding down, the New York senior team will be commencing their training for the arrival of Galway for the FBD Championship encounter on October 19.
On this same day the New York County Board will honor the New York hurling squad that won the 1958 St. Brendan Cup.
The team defeated Wexford, who were the National League champions, in Croke Park on an unforgettable afternoon in September of that year, just weeks after they defeated Kilkenny in two games at Gaelic Park in June. Kilkenny were the All-Ireland champions at the time of those two contests.
Wexford were overcome 3-8 to 3-7. The team and panel of players who pulled off that historic win were as follows - Paddy Fleming, Paddy Dowling, Jimmy Carey, P.J. Birmingham, Dave DeLoughery, Martin Murphy, Kevin Long, Mike Hennessy, Brendan Hennessy, Ralph Prendergast, Billy Duffy, Norman Allen, Mickey Furlong, Sean O'Meara, Paddy Egan, Pat Aherne, Mike Minogue, Brendan Dolan, Ken Croke, Jim "Balbo" O'Connell, Paddy Heron. Connie Dolan, manager Peter McDermott, selector John Leahy, Tim Cloen, trainer Mickey Connell.
While some of the players and their families have been contacted already, if anyone has a contact or phone number for a player or family they are asked to call Eugene Kyne at 646-483-9732 or Brendan Hennessy at 321-728-8573. It is hoped that all players can be represented on the day; the team will be presented to the crowd at half time of the Galway vs. New York match.
