On the night of their very successful annual dinner dance on Saturday, November 22, the New York Ladies GAA announced their 2009 all-stars.
On the heels of a brilliant year when the county final went to a replay before Cavan took home the championship, some brilliant individual displays were seen at the Mecca. In that final Emma Clarke scored 2-8, while Molly O'Rourke fired in 3-5.
Add to the mix 2-3 by Marie O'Neill for Cavan and 3-1 from Mary O'Rourke for Na Fianna in what was a game of two halves but one of the best displays in any code all year. In the replay Kelly McArdle was the top scorer with 1-3 for Cavan, while player of the year Molly O'Rourke had 0-7 from frees and play. It was not all about the top two teams in New York, however. Denise Dunnion was a scoring machine again for Kerry/Donegal as she regularly chipped in with top scoring efforts, while her teammate Shuvan Neville had some very impressive displays for the same club at the defensive end. Cavan topped the all-star list with seven players, and it was not all about scoring for them. Last season's player of the year Linda McKeon deservedly took one of the midfield slots, while the play at the back of Catherine Smith, former player of the year Mary Maguire, who was also their captain, and Aimee Gomez was a huge factor in shutting down opposing attacks. Na Fianna had four winners, including the aforementioned Molly O'Rourke, who is a bona-fide super star for her scoring and open play. Nora McGrail had a brilliant season in goal with timely saves and excellent clearances, while Joanne Monaghan is an outstanding defender. Fermanagh with two winners rounded out the 15, with Tracy Ann McCullough and Clare McElroy. Here's the team - 1 Nora McGrail (Na Fianna), 2 Shuvan Neville (Kerry/Donegal), 3 Mary Maguire (Cavan), 4 Clare McElroy (Fermanagh), 5 Catherine Smith (Cavan), 6 Joanne Monaghan (Na Fianna), 7 Aimee Gomez (Cavan), 8 Tracey Ann McCullough (Fermanagh), 9 Linda McKeon (Cavan), 10 Mary O'Rourke (Na Fianna), 11 Molly O'Rourke (Na Fianna), 12 Marie O'Neill (Cavan), 13 Denise Dunnion (Kerry/Donegal), 14 Emma Clarke (Cavan), 15 Kelly McArdle (Cavan).
