Rallying cry or famous last words? Either way, Coach Brian Kelly introduced a new motto after the Fighting Irish’s 31-17 loss to USC on October 22.
And at the weekend the players were shouting it before Saturday’s 56-14 win over the Navy.
'I felt like my job is to have the pulse of our team, and I felt like 'Count on me,' meant accountability, responsibility, getting my job done, taking care of my business,' Kelly told the Journal Gazette.
Next on the slate Notre Dame (5-3) travel to play Wake Forest (5-3) on Saturday night.
Kelly believes the new pep phrase will keep the team focused on the bigger picture and take the spotlight off his controversial post-practice comments last week, which led to a heated team meeting.
Some critics suggest it’s the rearguard action of a coach who realizes he’s made strategic errors and is frantically covering attempting to cover them up with chipper platitudes.
We’ll find out who’s right this Saturday.
