Well, aren’t we lucky – because sure, parents are loving Irish baby names for their newborns right now, but given our rich cultural heritage and history, there are so many gorgeous monikers to choose from, many of them almost forgotten about today, and certainly nowhere near the most-popular lists.
And one of these names is one that very few parents use today – but that is actually really perfect for babies born this month.
An Irish baby name with holy history
Say hello to the Irish baby name Naomhán – a name so rare it was given to fewer than three baby boys born in Ireland in 2025, according to official figures from the CSO.
Naomhán, says Coláiste na hÉireann Gaelchultúr, the first third-level Irish language institution, is a name that is derived from the word ‘naomh’ (saint), and it means little saint.
The English name "Nevan" originates from the Irish moniker Naomhán.
And what is more, it turns out this particular moniker is ideal for babies born this time of year, as Naomhán was a saint whose feast day was celebrated every year on September 13th.
The website Ancestry.com confirms that Naomhán originated in Ireland, but was also made popular among Irish diaspora communities across the world, and the same was the case for the English version of the name.
They write: "Culturally, Naomhán/Nevan is linked to the rich tradition of saints in Irish history."
They also explain that the use of names related to saints is prevalent in Irish culture as a means of conveying religious devotion and respect.
"The name Naomhán/Nevan, with its connotations of holiness, is often bestowed upon boys to instill values of piety and moral integrity."
