One Direction get booed at NRJ Music Awards in Cannes |
The British/Irish boy band was greeted with malicious jeers as they took to the stage at the awards ceremony held at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, France, to pick up their two trophies for Best International Group and Video of the Year for 'Best Song Ever.'
French fans were outraged by the audience's spiteful reaction to 1D and took to Twitter to complain.
One ranted: "For those of you who booed 1D, if you're not happy you should have voted, you bunch of idiots! #NMA"
Another sadly declared: "Katy Perry's mic didn't work, One Direction were booed! We're not going to be seeing any more international stars here in the future... #NMA"
Even those who aren't fans of 1D's brand of pop defended them on the social networking site.
An angry user wrote:"I don't understand why One Direction were booed bearing in mind that THEY actually made the effort to come to France. Everyone has different tastes! #nma"
Katy Perry - who picked up two prizes including Song of the Year for 'Roar' - gave her pals' confidence a boost, however, by dedicating her Best International Female Artist gong to Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik.
She said: "I would like to thank my French Katycats, I love you. I would also like to dedicate this award to One Direction. Without you, I wouldn't be here. Thanks!"
This comes after One Direction was booed at the MTV VMAs in August and the boys were given a pep talk by Lady Gaga backstage, who reassured them they were worthy winners.
Electro pop sensation Stromae, Bruno Mars, French singer Tal and James Arthur were the other big winners of the night.
