A fisherman who was injured in a shark bite in Waterford admitted that he is "very lucky" after surviving the bite.
The terrifying incident occurred just off the coast of Ardmore on Tuesday afternoon (August 11), with a fisherman getting bitten in the leg.
Ballycotton RNLI said that it was part of a multi-agency operation following the bite, after it received a request from the Dublin Coast Guard around 4:15 pm.
The injured fisherman, Sebastian Achim, told All About Cork with Paul Byrne that he was part of a group of friends who were on a fishing trip that caught three blue sharks, which they brought alongside the boat before releasing them.
However, Sebastian brought a fourth blue shark aboard after the group caught it — with the shark biting him in the leg and causing extensive injuries.
"I finally managed to land my first blue shark," Sebastian said. "When I was admiring the catch, the catch decided to lunge at my leg."
"Blood was everywhere," Sebastian added, explaining that the shark managed to take half of his calf in the terrifying bite.
Despite the ordeal, Sebastian managed to remain calm while his friends used a makeshift tourniquet and raised the alarm.
A Rescue 117 helicopter was tasked to the scene of the attack, while volunteer lifeboats with Ballycotton RNLI and Youghal RNLI helped airlift Sebastian to hospital.
"I feel very lucky," Sebastian admitted. "I am ok now and hopefully I will recover quick from this."
