Counting is underway in the 2024 General Election as X lit up with tweets which perfectly captured the mood of the nation.
After the public headed to the polls on Friday, November 29, the process of figuring out just who will be the winners began at 9am on Saturday morning.
The early winners of the day appeared to be Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald, Tánaiste Micheal Martin and Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch, who was placing fourth Dublin Central an hour into the count.
Many politicians took to Twitter, now known as X, to thank those who voted for them for their support after weeks of a campaign which never really caught fire.
Sharing an image of her and Pearse Doherty, Mary Lou McDonald wrote: ‘Míle Buíochas to everyone who voted for Sinn Féin today, endorsed Sinn Féin candidates and backed our message of change and hope. A special thanks to our amazing activists who left it all on the pitch in this campaign.
‘We will always work to make life better for workers, families and communities. To unite Ireland. To build a brighter future for all.’

The Tánaiste decided to go for a post paying tribute to his canvasing shoes, saying in a video: ‘Three weeks ago I collected these shoes from Fordes in Mitchellstown. He had them repaired, they held up well. They’ve walked miles since then, they’ve done a great job.’

While many politicians have posted on the site, Fine Gael appear to be holding back on sharing their thoughts, including the Taoiseach Simon Harris, who is yet to tweet about Friday’s developments.
Independent candidate for Dublin West Susanne Delaney wasn’t in the mood making light of the election, saying in a post: ‘Always remember, It’s very hard to rescue folk from a burning building when they haven’t realised it’s on fire. #GeneralElection2024.’

One person tried to lift the mood of those with political fatigue, saying in a post: ‘Whatever happens with these General Election results, at least we still have this icon as President for another while.’

Another Twitter user couldn’t help but say: ‘#GeneralElection2024 Only 50% voter turnout because the other 50% are in Australia.’

No matter what happens over the coming days, it’s hard to argue that no post will be as heartwarming as Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns announcing the arrival of her first child, a baby girl on election day.
‘She’s here. We’re completely in love with her,’ Ms Cairns wrote.
The Cork TD announced she was expecting her first child with her partner Barry Looney earlier this year.
