A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of gunman Tristan Sherry, who was killed after a botched shooting at a Dublin restaurant on Christmas Eve.

Sherry, a 26-year-old father of one, was fatally assaulted and stabbed after a botched gangland hit at Browne's Steakhouse in Blanchardstown at around 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Sherry reportedly entered the restaurant, which was full of families out for dinner on Christmas Eve, and fired several shots at a father and son, who were the targets of the hit.

A man in his 40s is in critical condition in Connolly Hospital after receiving several gunshot wounds during the attack.

Sherry tried to flee the scene but was trapped by a locked door. He was then disarmed and stabbed several times, while the Irish Independent also reports that he was shot in the head with his own gun during the confrontation.

The Independent reports that the gun was not located at the scene and that gardaí are still searching for the weapon.

Sherry was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to Connolly Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Gardaí are treating the gun attack as gang-related and believe that it is connected to an ongoing drug feud, according to RTÉ News. Detectives are treating Sherry's death as a murder investigation

Detectives from Blanchardstown arrested a man on Friday night in connection with Sherry's murder.

The man is being questioned under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and can be detained for up to 24 hours.

Funeral details for Sherry have yet to be announced, but it is expected to take place in the coming days. A significant security operation, including armed gardaí, will reportedly be in place at Sherry's funeral out of fears of a reprisal attack.

Gardaí have also stepped up patrols in west Dublin in response to the shooting in a bid to prevent any retaliatory attacks.
