Kellie Collins was hoping to take on Congress, but is now behind bars.

Kellie Collins was running for Georgia's 10th congressional district when she suddenly dropped out of the spotlight, citing "personal reasons."

The Democratic candidate had been actively calling for tighter gun laws in Atlanta during her campaign - however, it came to light this week that she had been arrested on murder and grand larceny charges.

According to the Augusta Chronicle, the 31-year-old is accused of shooting and killing Curt Cain, her former campaign treasurer.

The 41-year-old's body was discovered last week after he did not show up for work. Collins reportedly shared an apartment with Cain, with whom she was romantically involved.

As per the local coroner, Cain died due to blood loss after being shot. Collins surrendered herself to authorities soon after.
