An Irish father reportedly died while swimming at Costa del Sol in Spain on Monday, April 28, during the widespread power outage across the country.
Darren, who is understood to be from Dublin and aged in his 50s, was holidaying in southern Spain with his son and the boy's grandmother, The Spanish Eye reports.
Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs told The Spanish Eye that it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance, but noted that it does not comment on the details of individual cases.
Menno van Oorschot, another holidaymaker, was on the beach when the tragedy unfolded on Monday and shared his account of the "very sad day" in a public social media post afterward.
van Oorschot said Monday began with the "very large power outage" that hit Spain, Portugal, and parts of France and Italy, which he described as "annoying" and led to "inconveniences."
The Dutch tourist said that it was "very turbulent in Torremolinos, la Carihuela, and Benalmádena," adding that the sea was "very rough" and that there was a "very strong current."
He noted that there were no 'rescue workers' present as it's not peak season yet.
"I told my mate Ingo that people better not go into the sea...," van Oorschot wrote.
He said that he and his mate were surprised that some people were letting their children play in "the wild sea," but they kept a watchful eye across the "big waves."
"While we were drinking our drink on the beach I noticed at first glance someone was sinking in the sea about 80 meters from us," van Oorschot recounted.
"I quickly and without hesitation threw my stuff at Lindsay [his partner] and stumbled upon that individual in the wild sea."
van Oorschot said others joined him in getting the swimmer back onto the beach, where they attempted to resuscitate him.
Their efforts, however, were unsuccessful, and the man "unfortunately died," van Oorschot said
He continued: "The realization of how much we depend on the internet and telephone has taken a toll on me.
"They couldn't call the emergency services, and when the police finally arrived, the ambulance could be alerted by the phone.
"All of this took a very long time, too long...."
van Oorschot added that he learned that the man who died was on vacation with his son and the boy's grandmother "to process the loss of the boy's mother who had unfortunately died 6 weeks before the holiday."
The Dutch man said: "The feeling of powerlessness still creeps in with me even though I know we all did our utmost to save this man's life today.
"Look closely at each other and dare to correct another if another does something dangerous. It could cost someone's life."
