A 33-YEAR-old Galway man living in Boston died in his sleep on Wednesday, January 23. Eddie Treacy, who was discovered by his roommate, died of pneumonia. Treacy, who left Athenry in Co. Galway eight years ago to start a new life in Dorchester, Massachusetts, was a carpenter by trade. He had never traveled home during the time he had been here.Treacy was a regular customer at Eire Pub in Dorches-ter. Bartender Damien O'Halloran told the Irish Voice on Tuesday that Treacy will be dearly missed. "We all knew Eddie well here. We saw him on a regular basis and there was never a harsh word out of the guy," said O'Halloran, who described Treacy as "a lad that kept to himself a lot." Describing his love for the GAA - he played hurling for Fr. Tom Burke Hurling club for number of years - O'Halloran said that his customer was always talking about the Gaelic sports and enjoyed a good game. "He really did love the craic," he added.Treacy, who was undocumented, was waked at the Keaney Funeral Home in Dorchester on Monday, January 28 following a Mass at St. Brendan's Church, also in Dorchester. "The ceremony was wonderful. They played 'The Fields of Athenry.' That was where Eddie came from you know," said O'Halloran. After the service 200 plus friends of the Galway man gathered together outside the church for a photo that was to be brought back to Ireland to Treacy's family. His body was flown back to Ireland the next day where he was buried in his fields of Athenry. He is survived by his parents Michael and Ann Treacy, and his siblings Valerie, Michelle, Michael, Raymond and Gerry, all living in Galway.
