The dissident republican group Óglaigh na hÉireann (ONH) have confirmed that the target for the bomb discovered in County Fermanagh this weekend was the Lough Erne Resort, the venue set to play host to Barack Obama, David Cameron and Vladimir Putin among others at the G8 Summit.
A 60kg device, made from homemade explosives, concealed in a beer keys was found in a car near Derrylin on Friday.
PSNI Area Commander Pauline Shields released a statement on Saturday claiming the bomb was destined for Lisnaskea Police Station. However the ONH released a statement on Monday, to the Ulster Television (UTV) newsroom that the Lough Erne Resort in Enniskillen was their target.
Shields has since released a statement saying the police are playing down these claims by ONH. He said “This was an attempt to murder and maim. We have already said what our assessment is. It cannot be overlooked that this was an attempt to cause death."
This June the Lough Erne complex is set to play how to the leader’s of the world’s most powerful nations. The complex stands on 600-acres between the two lakes in Fermanagh.
The bomb claims is not expected to alter the planned meetings on June 17. Hundreds of officers will flood the area and spy drones will monitor from the skies.
The ONH has been responsible for more than 20 attacks, or attempted attacks, since it became active in 2009.
