David 'Mogie' Magill was shot dead while opening his Irish pub in Pennsylvania early on Thursday morning, December 21.

Magill, 64, was shot dead outside Mogie's Irish Pub in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania, at around 9 am on Thursday, December 21.

Emergency services attempted to provide aid at the scene, but Magill, who suffered a gunshot wound to the torso, was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Nathan Salem, 45, has been charged with first-degree murder and criminal homicide after reportedly turning himself in at Lower Burrell City Hall.

"I shot him," Salem told police, according to an affidavit filed to support the murder charges against him.

Lower Burrell Police Chief John Marhefka said Salem's motive remains unclear.

He added that officers found multiple bullet holes in Magill's car in the parking lot of the Irish pub, adding that at least one bullet went through a window in the pub and lodged itself in an interior wall.

Salem had no prior criminal record.

District Judge Cheryl Peck Yakopec said Salem will be held without bond ahead of a preliminary hearing scheduled for January 3.

Hundreds of people gathered in Lower Burrell on Thursday night to pay tribute to Magill, with mourners lighting candles and raising them into the air in honor of the slain bar owner.

Magill's friend Jackie Shaw, who attended Thursday night's vigil, told Channel 11 News that Magill's murder was "absolutely devastating" for the local community.

"Mogie was the type of person that if you met him for the first time it felt like you knew him for your entire life," Shaw told Channel 11 News.

Pastor Dean Ward, who also attended the vigil, described Magill as one of the "strongest people in the community."

"He was a gravitational pull that pulled in people from all around to bless and help and do good. He supported the police officers. He supported families," Ward told CBS Pittsburgh.
